What to expect

Brisbane Feeding Clinic runs as an inter-professional clinic combining Speech Pathology and Occupational Therapy for feeding support.

What does that mean?

You and your child will be seen by both an Occupational Therapist and a Speech Pathologist at the same time in your assessment appointment.

What will happen?

Before you come to your first appointment, we will ask you to complete a comprehensive feeding history. Completing these forms will allow the therapists more time during your appointment to observe your child’s feeding skills and answer your questions.

We offer flexible assessment options and endeavour to work with families to make the assessment process as easy as possible for you and your child. If your child becomes dysregulated in new environments, we recommend requesting a parent only meeting as our initial contact, so that we can gather background information and discuss the best ways to gather additional assessment information. This may be via video footage or case conferencing with your current therapists.

In your first appointment we will:

  • Give you 1-1.5 hours of dedicated time – one therapist to listen to your story and one therapist to interact with your child and assess their oral motor and eating skills
  • Break down eating and feeding into their individual parts so you understand where your strengths are and where you need to focus your efforts
  • Give you a step by step plan to follow in your own time
  • Provide you with an easy to read comprehensive summary with links to additional resources that you can use and share with other people in your child’s life
  • Support you by email or phone for simple issues that come up
  • Offer you more extended support if you want at any time
  • Link you into local therapists if needed

Most of the families that come to see us feel heard and understood in just one session and leave feeling like they have a plan.

Subsequent individual appointments may be recommended and will focus on areas that you wish to explore further, as well as direct intervention with your child.

If you have come recommended by another therapy practice, you can return to your usual therapist for longer term therapy or stay with Brisbane Feeding Clinic for feeding therapy if you wish.  Your therapist is welcome to contact us for more information or you can take what you have learned directly to them.

Assessment Summary

A written summary of assessment and recommendations will be provided at the end of your initial assessment appointment and is included in the cost of the initial session.

Please contact us if you would like us to book our next available assessment appointment.

Infant feeding concerns requiring Speech Pathology only assessment are available upon request through the contact page.
