EXISTING CHAIR

HOW TO USE YOUR EXISTING CHAIR

You want a position that supports your child

  • to sit with hips, knees and ankles at 90°
  • to sit with the table at about belly button height

Foot rest or stool
Cost: Variable

The important rules to follow when using a foot stool are:

  1. Make sure it is stable and stationary.  A moving, wobbly foot stool is worse than no foot stool at all! Heavy books or sandbags can keep it stable.
  2. Make sure you adhere to the 90:90:90 degree rule for ankles, knees and hips

OR try an aerobic stepper https://www.kmart.com.au/product/aerobic-stepper-42189879/

OR make your own from a stack of magazines or heavy books and some tape.

Chair Risers
Cost: Variable

Instead of cushions to raise the child higher, these will raise the chair higher to the table.  Make sure the tabletop is at about belly button height.  These will need to be used in conjunction with a foot stool.
Often available at hardware stores (Bunnings).

Nibble and Rest Footsi Grow
Cost: $119

Cushions
Cost: Variable

For the seat to get your child above the table (tabletop at about belly button height), but may also be needed for the backrest to shorten the depth of the seat. Make sure your child’s elbows are roughly 90 degrees when rested on the tabletop (meaning the table top is roughly at belly button level) and your child’s bottom is at the back of the chair with 3-5cm between the front of the seat and the back of their knees.

Non-slip matting
Cost: Variable

Can help children stay seated on any chair.  It provides a little bit of resistance and can stop children slipping on a wooden chair.
Available at most “dollar stores”, kitchen shops or hardware stores

Wobble Cushion
Cost: From $12

A wobble cushion can help decrease wriggling in the chair, or it might just be too distracting! Available from KMart or sensory stores.
